Jai took the second shift on this trip from West Memphis, Arkansas, to Salt Lake City, Utah… 1687 miles.
I woke up this morning in Nebraska, at the beginning of NE 2, up to I-80.
We stopped at a Pilot to fuel. A Pilot too small to do anything but fuel. No Bellicon. No breakfast. The lanes were hoping’. It’s the only place to fuel on this route and everyone stopped at the same time we did!
After fueling I was in the seat but still not quite awake. We stopped a short way up the road so I could pull out the Bellicon, have a bite to eat and make tea for the road.
While bouncing on the B., I hung the timer on the handle of the sidebox.
Less than half an hour later, heading north up 2, a tanker called over the CB, “Conway… got it on?”
“Sure do. Come on,” I said.
“Looks like you got something hanging there on your sidebox. Can’t tell what it is… might be worth checking out.”
“Thanks driver. I appreciate the heads up.”
Of course, my next move was to stop and grab the timer before it fell off in the road!
At this point Jai said it’s time for a “new rule”. These come up when something like this happens more than once. I left the timer in the hand-pull on the hood a couple weeks ago.
“No hanging anything, anywhere on the truck, for any reason. Agreed?”
I agreed. A little grudgingly. But it’s a good rule and I was definitely guilty of doing this twice… so there it is.
I came across the great state of Nebraska into Wyoming, during my shift. 478 miles. A little short of my usual full day… but hey …I stopped to make a pot full of delicious pasta! A bit of cooking that filled the truck with the wonderful smell of sautéed onions and garlic. As they say in the south…. “so good it’s make your tongue beat your brains out!”
Where in the world do sayings like that come from? 🙂
As I write this, I’m sitting at Sapp Brothers waiting for Jai to finish his morning rituals and take over…
I stopped here for one very simple reason… HEATED TOILET SEATS!
Okay, that is likely TMI, but the fact is they’re wonderful. And a bidet. With warm water.
Even more TMI!
Think what you will but if you ever stop at a Sapp Brothers and experience these little beauties, you’ll become a believer…
The day was beautiful. 50’s and 60’s all day. In Nebraska. After the winter, it’s delicious.
I’m looking forward to spring and summer… my favorite seasons.
As of right now there’s 448 miles left to Salt Lake. Looks like we’ll be early. If Jai gets up that is! I better go nibble on his ear. 🙂
Good night beautiful country!
